Global Off-Grid Population Numbers: In 2022, the number of people worldwide without access to electricity was set to increase for the first time in decades, reaching 760 million. This rise was mainly observed in Sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for 80% of the global population lacking electricity access.

Situation in Sub-Saharan Africa: The number of people without electricity in this region almost returned to historic highs, increasing from 580 million in 2019 to 600 million in 2022. Less than a fifth of African countries have set targets for universal electricity access by 2030, with an additional 45% of the continent setting less ambitious targets.

Projections for 2030: It's estimated that about 660 million people will remain without access to electricity in 2030, with approximately 560 million of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. Countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, and Uganda will represent almost half of the global population without electricity access by 2030.
Gender-Specific Impact:

Women and children in these regions are disproportionately affected by the lack of electricity. They face challenges in education, health, and economic opportunities.

Women, often being the primary caregivers and managers of household energy, struggle with health issues due to the use of traditional cooking methods and lack of lighting.

Children's education and safety are compromised due to inadequate lighting and access to educational resources.

Lifeline Action's Approach:

Partnership with Local and International Solar Suppliers: Collaborating with both local and international suppliers to provide access to solar pay-as-you-go (PAYG) systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. This approach ensures the availability of affordable and sustainable electricity solutions.

Empowering Women and Children: Specifically targeting programs that empower women and children by providing them with access to electricity. This can significantly improve their quality of life, health, and education.

Capacity Building and Education: Implementing training programs for local communities, particularly focusing on women, to educate them about the benefits and maintenance of solar energy systems.

Community Engagement: Working closely with community leaders and members to ensure the adoption of solar energy solutions is sustainable and meets the specific needs of each community.
